Gerard was on Kerrang! radio this week with Emma Scott from Monday through to Thursday (it was all pre-recorded) and, being the computer-dwelling nerd that I am, I recorded some it from the 19th and wrote up a transcript:
Emma: Did you expect to cause such a stir with the whole mysterious Black Parade thing? Y'know, when you started that whole idea did you think it was gunna go crazy like that?
Gerard: I think so, I mean, because I visioned our fans as The Black Parade, and us as this alter-ego band, y'know it means so many things, thats the best part about it. It's a way to represent our fans, it's the concept of the record, it's the alter-ego, so I didn't exactly expect it to... we had to come back with something, we couldn't simply just strip it down, erm, that's not what this...
Emma: You couldn't do it simply, could you? Let's have a third album, y'know, get it out.
Gerard: No... it could just be a collection of songs, it could just be a regular band... it had to be over the top, that's what we are. Like, we had to push ourselves, we had to push everything. The name, the look, our fans, everything. I knew it'd be something everyone could put themselves into right away.
Emma: Are you gunna go back to being My Chemical Romance, proper?
Gerard: We still are, really. I mean, we haven't done a full production yet as The Black Parade and that won't come 'til next year, so we're actually, y'know, currently, just kind of doing half and half. We're always going to be My Chemical Romance, that's the vibe that we... you can't, y'know, when we're playing special clubs, when you're playing to so many fans, you can't stand up there and pretend you're something you're not, we're proud of who we are, it's just really a metaphorical thing.
Emma: Some of the fans think that you might be turning your back on them, and saying 'we're not My Chemical Romance, I'm the Black Parade now', kinda thing.
Gerard: The sense that I've gotten from fans is that they're excited for us, they're trying to be a part of it. Especially for our fans, they like change, I think they encourage change. I think they'd be disappointed if we gave three more cheers for sweet revenge. I actually think they're very skeptical...
Enjoy =]
Peace.
