Chapter One
BAT POST

Gerard Way was a highly unusual boy in many ways. For one thing, he hated the summer more than any other time of the year. For another, he really wanted to do his homework, but was forced to do it in secret, in the dead of night (which he didn't really mind). He also happened to be a wizard.

The Osbourne family of number 4, Privet Drive, were one of the reasons that Gerard never enjoyed the summer. The other one was because of a strong aversion to light, but with the circumstances he would much rather be burning outside than being in the same room as his Uncle Ozzy.
They were Gerard's only living relatives, left to bring him up after that fateful night when his parents were murdered by Lord Justimort - who also went by the name of Justin Hawkins. They were muggles and had a very medieval attitude towards magic and vampires. Gerard's dead parents, who had been a witch and wizard themselves, were never mentioned under the Osbourne's roof.

This summer, Gerard was confined to his bedroom by his Aunt and Uncle, who had decided that the only way of stopping him from roaming the streets was to lock him away. However, this meant that Gerard was separated from his schoolbooks, which was unfortunate as he had a particularly nasty essay due for his least favourite teacher, Professor Francis.

Frank Iero, who came from a family of wizards, had called to speak to Gerard over the holidays. Unluckily, Uncle Ozzy had answered the phone. And as Frank had never used the telephone before, he was in for a nasty surprise.

"Ozzy speaking."
"Hello? Hello? Can you hear me? I want to talk to Gerard Way."
"Who the fuck is this? Who the fucking hell are you?"
"Uh... I'm a... friend... of Gerard's from... school."
"There's no Gerard fucking Way here! I don't give a shit about what school you're talking about, never contact me again you bastard, and don't come near my goddamn family!"

The row that followed had been one of the worst ever.
"How dare you give this fucking telephone number to shitheads like... like YOU?" Uncle Ozzy had roared, spraying Gerard with spit.
Frank had obviously realised he'd got Gerard in trouble as he never called again. He also seemed to of warned Ray not to call either, in case she got into trouble too. There was only one upside to spending five weeks alone - after swearing he wouldn't use it to send letters to his friends, Gerard was allowed to save his paperweight from Uncle Ozzy's dinner every night by letting it fly outside every night. He had even succeeded in teaching it to fly, which was quite an achievement for a 69 year old preserved bat paperweight.

One evening, Gerard was sitting in his bedroom being perfectly innocent and doing nothing dirty at all, when a knock on the window announced the arrival of Eddie, Frank's zombie owl. As he tore open the letter titled 'Happy Late Birthday', he was greeted with a message from Frank, telling him all about his trip to Egypt with his family. At the bottom, he spotted another sentence.

PS: Matt's head boy this year. What will it take to stab him and to smear around his brains? (Matt is a gheyy.)

He also received a letter from his school, Vampwarts School Of the Supernatural and Rock History, informing him of the time and date for the departure at the beginning of term and his list of school books. There was also another letter enclosed, which Gerard peered at sadly. It was a permission slip for the school trips to the village of Hogsmede, which needed to be signed by a parent or guardian. Gerard, however, knew that his Aunt Sharon nor his Uncle Ozzy would ever sign the form, especially as the arrival of Aunt Hillary drew nearer...
