On 30th March 2007, Allie & Zoe & myself saw My Chemical Romance (again) at London Wembely Arena.
So we went to school, and after the bell went at 12:05 to signal the end of term, we ran out of class and met up, went to the loos and got changed rather quickly, then ran out again, past everyone in the corridors giving us funny looks, and into Allie's dads car. There we sat for around an hour, entertaining ourselves by spotting horses that looked like cows and reading a lorry called "Arcses" which we pronounced as arses. At around half one, we parked up in the "green car park" near Wembely, did hair and walked up to the Arena, where there was hardly any lines.
We waited for five and a half hours, IN THE RAIN, occaisionally popping off to MacDonalds for the bathroom, eating pizza and laughing at the people in front of us, which consisted of a guy who we thought was a girl before he started talking about man things.
At about half four, however, we noticed we were at the North East entrance, and that our tickets read South East. Well, we were too far up the line to go to another entrance, so when doors opened, we snuck past first security, gave in our tickets, got wristbands and searched, and made our way towards the arena.
Going into the arena, we noticed everybody was sitting down. So I ran to catch up with Allie, who was walking rather fast, so I got shouted at by security, so we all sat down in the fifth or sixth row. Scoreee. And we waited for another hour and a half for... Thursday.
When everyone stood up for Thursday, everyone fell over and then surged towards the barrier. I got caught up in the forth row, Zoe swapping places with me so I could stand on t he grate and see better, putting me in the third row. There I stayed for all of Thursdays act, which consisted of songs like The Other Side Of The Crash, Geoff dancing like he was leading a yoga class, Geoff leaning into the crowd (I touched him =D), Geoff talking about how great MCR were and how NJ is literally a swamp, and his trousers slipping rather far down his arse. Loads of people were carried over the barrier, kicking us in the head as they went.
During the break between Thursday and MCR, I got talking with a guy stood next to me who stopped me from falling over. The girls on the barrier in front of us were singing Fall Out Boy and The Killers, so we had a go at them and they shut up. Then the lights went out, and there was wails and screams and yells and another surge towards the barrier as Gerard was rolled onto the stage on his gurney.
The first song - The End, typically. Gerard jumped off of the gurney, drawn on sideburns in full view, ripping off his hospital gown at the end of verse 1 to reveal full Black Parade uniform, and BAM! - the curtain fell just like we knew it would, and there was Mikey Frank Ray and ol'Bob, with a Fleur de Lis on his bass drum.
Next - Dead. Lots of hyped up jumping and screaming, and Gerard darting across the stage like... well I dunno what like. He got the crowd to sing along to the "1, 2, 1 3 4! LA LA LA LA LA!" bit with just words. Ray showed off some of his moves too, and Mikey actually moved to the front of the stage for a while.
Third - This Is How I Disappear. Lots of multicolored lights, screaming and pointing. Gee made the audience sing all the swearwords, grinning like a fool. He also used the word "motherfuckers" about six times already.
Fourth - The Sharpest Lives, surprisingly enough, as they never used to play it. Again with the multicolored lights, a great performance from the band, although it was ruined a bit by the shouts of "I LOVE YOU GERARD!" and the bouncers dragging people out of the crowd. By this time things we really, really starting to heat up so water was being tipped over the crowd for lack of better word, going over everyones faces and down their shirts (as did happen to me.)
Fifth - guess what, it was Welcome To The Black Parade. Gerard looked slightly pained at the beginning, but it livened up so well, Gerard doing his video moves on the stage. Again, view was blocked by bouncers and kicks in the head. A HUGE bomb of confetti exploded over the standing audience at the end, going EVERYWHERE, getting like swallowed and stuck to bodies and everything, all you could see was this black and white mass falling from the sky.
Then, I Don't Love You. Lots of waving and near silence, blue lights shining on the stage but mainly on Gerard to create a sadder environement. You could really see the emotion on the stage. By this time, I was already pressed into the second row, able to kick the barrier.
Everything went black, in preparation for House of Wolves - probably one of the highlights for me. The drums started in the darkness, the spotlight shining on Bob, who was seated on a new drumkit on a spinning podium. Gerard had the audience in the palm of his hand, commanding us to jump, Frank seemed a bit more lively than he had been previously, Ray showed off a bit, and even Mikey was putting some emotion in.
After, Gerard did a mini speech for the next song, about how it was for all those who lost someone to Cancer, and there were t-shirts on sale and the money would go to charity. He sounded like he was on helium again, haha, and his sideburns had worn off. Cancer was performed in near silence, blue lights and lots of waving too.
And then, darkness, eventually lit up with red lights to show Gerard strutting across the stage with his legs at right angles to his body. This was the song that would be the other highlight of the show for me - Mama. The crowd and Gee were singing in harmony, the crowd singing the parts of Mother War and Gerard singing as the son. Ray was playing his guitar like a banjo =D. Once again, lots of swearing on the crowds and Gerard's part. And then, after the "It's really quite pleasant except for the smell" versey part thing, BOOM! - fire spurted up from the stage, lighting and heating up the arena, sending the burning crowd crazy. It was SO FUCKING HOT. Water was given out afterwards, thankfully. And at the end of mama, Gerard cried like a little boy, smiling. And then he let out this evil cackle that was SO funny, and that went on for about five minutes, and all went black again.
The tenth song of MCR's set was Sleep, the recordings from the album played at the beginning, it was so unexpected! The song got a huge reaction, but not as huge as the following song.
The next one was Teenagers. Gee said something I couldn't really hear too well at the beginning, but everyone was screaming the lyrics and jumping on Gerard's command.
Next, Disenchanted. Some random stuff was said at the beginning by Gerard again, ending in "This song is called, uh, Disenchanted" and everyone was waving and singing along. Confetti from WTTBP was still falling from the ceiling xD and the blue lighting was back. Mikey got gutsy and moved across the stage, his Morrissey hair cut flattened and sticking out at odd angles, aww =]. Frank was sprawled out on the floor playing lying down 'cuz he was ill =[. Sparks fell above the stage near the end, I think, it could have been in I Don't Love You. And loads of emotion was put into it from the band, and it ended, once again, in darkness.
Song thirteen - Famous Last Words. Just like in the video, so much fire! Loads of screaming and jumping and everything, especially at the part where Gerard falls to the floor. A huge bang at the end, and then there was darkness, the band gone from the stage, with Blood playing over the PA like at Brixton.
And just when you think it was all over, and the audience gave up their chant for MCR, guitar sounds start emitting from behind the curtain. Everyone started talking, unaware of what was gunna happen next.
The curtain flew up again, and BANG! - REVENGE LIVES ON! Shotgun banner, tight jeans, black shirts, Bob's odd socks, Gerard in his black hoody with the hood up all the time and a T on the arm, YELLOW AND BLUE SHOES, corded microphone, creating a HUUGEEEE reaction from the crowd for the frsit song of the 2004 good stuff - I'm Not Okay. With Gerard prancing around like a ballet dancer, and Ray letting his fro' loose, that really was an amazing start to the "encore".
Other songs on the Revenge setlist were Cemetary Drive, Thank You For The Venom, Give 'Em Hell, Kid, You Know What They Do To Guys Like Us In Prison, and Helena, in that order I thinkkkk. Gerard made some speech that nobody could hear at the beginning of Cemetary Drive, and he made us all shout out to Frank before You Know What They Do..., because he was back in the dressing room ill, and was replaced by MCR's guitar tech.
Microphone twirling and flashy lights took over, the anger and energy from revenge firing up, ending as per usual on Helena, plunging us into darkness. And this time, the end was real.
It was around the time of I'm Not Okay that I realized I had been separated from Allie and Zoe, so I went to find them, confetti in one hand and inhaler in the other. I found Zoe first, and then we set off to find Allie, who was upset because she lost her letter to Gerard and her gun necklace from Zoe. We all traipsed out of the arena, past the loos and outside, trying to find Allie's dad, so we could go to the backstage door. Eventually we met up with him at the car, after Zoe and Allie ran through the water fountain, where he had some important news for us.
There was no backstage door. The band leave the venue from an underground passageway beneath the stage in a limo, apparently.
So, we were then driven back to Allies with the strangest sensation in my bones, of being both boiling and freezing at the same time. There we got changed and crashed out, half dead with nearly no limbs and turned into mindless zombies. Allie and I chatted for a while about the nights shindigs until we fell asleep, until we were ressurected in the morning of 31st March, drank coffee (or milkshake in Allie's case), change into school uniform (the only dry clothes we had) and were taken home. Although I still felt dead, and I left one of my shoes in Allie's car, and my phone at her house.
But it was TOTALLY worth waiting five and a half hours. We saw some girls in skirts with perfect hair leaving the venue, and when you think about it, would you really rather be like that, or hot and sweaty and nearly dead from such excitement? I know which one I would choose, and I'd so do it again.
Especially for my favorite band.
And at some point thorugh all of that, MCR's set was dedicated to fellow NJ band Thursday, and he praised us UK peoples for being the first to love My Chemical Romance, and that they loved us.
And now, for some of the finer quotes...
Girl in the bathroom at school: (after me and Allie emerge) Let's go now, I'm getting scared...
Allie: I wish someone'll throw up on me, just so I'd be warm.
Geoff: Y'know, New Jersey is like a swamp. In fact, it really is a swamp. It's all foggy and <forgets words here>, which is why we have such fucking good music like My Chemical Romance! And y'know, London's like that too, which is why London has such fucking good bands!
Gerard: We've known these guys, for five fucking years. We've been through it all together. They've slept on piss, and vomit, and glass with us, and now we're touring with them!
Xoxo
