One.“Number 941977 ready for autopsy, Dr Bell.” I nodded, pulling my gloves over my pale fingers, “Bring him in, Steve.” Wringing my hands nervously as I always did before an autopsy, I watched as the doors opened and my colleague wheeled in the body on a metal gurney. It stopped before me and I looked at the white body bag resentfully, knowing what was inside. People sometimes think that being a pathologist means you don’t respect the dead. But without autopsies, we would all be buried. We are what keeps the rest of us living and breathing. We discover disease, diagnose disease, and we help fight to keep it at bay. Sometimes, even the naked eye can’t see the cause of death. Sometimes the only way to find out is with a knife, a ton of tissues and a pair of weighing scales. But I don’t ever want it to happen to me. “Analysis?” “It’s a man, found in his attic room on the March 3rd. His friends discovered the body after he had been missing for three days.” “Alright,” I muttered, as Steve handed me the photographs of the crime scene, whilst pulling on his own sterile gloves. I placed the polaroids on a metal tray on the sideboard next to my tools and unzipped the bag, letting the sheets drape over the edges of the gurney. He had long dark hair, tickling his shoulders in a messy mass. His face, white as a sheet and frozen in a look of peace, stood out against his black clothes. I looked at him for a few seconds, taking in the faint blush on his cheeks and the way his fine, black eyelashes feel softly on his plastic-looking skin. Shame the guy was dead. Picking up a voice recorder from the tray, I pressed the record button, stating the appearance of our victim. “Caucasian man, estimated age early twenties, long black hair, dyed-“ I peeled back an eyelid carefully, admiring the iris, “green eyes, very pale.” I stopped the tape and turned to Steve. “Let’s get the ball rolling eh, sweetheart?” He smirked. I smiled weakly back and nodded, resisting the opportunity to take another glance at the man on the operating table as I pulled my scalpel from the tray, pressing the thin blade to the collar of his shirt and slowly drawing it downwards, watching the seams separate as I ripped off his clothes.

Two.
It was bizarre. It made no sense. How could this man die without any signs of even the slightest flaw in health? It just couldn’t happen. We all die for a reason.
“We must of missed something!” I exclaimed, as the dieners placed the body back onto its back, zipping the plastic over the fine black stitches criss-crossing across his torso from where incisions had been made. We must of overlooked something, anything. But I didn’t want to bring the knife to his skin again. He was too flawless, too perfect. I couldn’t bear it.
Who said we pathologists have no respect for the dead. Normally, if we couldn’t find an issue with the internal organs, we would move on to cut across the head and removed the top of the skull, examine the brain, remove it, weigh it, cut it, store it... I hadn’t allowed myself to do it.
I felt a hand on my shoulder and I jumped, feeling my skin prickle; a moment later, the person appeared in front of my face. “Look Yazz,” Steve said compassionately, patting my back, “there’s nothing more to do, the guys dead... we’ll never know.” “There’s gotta be something there!” I argued defiantly, “nobody just drops dead without a reason!” Steve removed his hands from my shoulders and reached to my desk, picking up the paperwork there.
“Well, Gerard Way did.” “Nobody just dies. There’s no evidence pointing towards anything. It’s gotta be something... new. Something we’ve never seen before.” He sighed, “It could have been suicide. Friends say the guy was depressed.” “Think about it, Steve! If he hung himself, there would be signs of irritation in the oesophagus, indicating suffocation. We didn’t find anything. If he’d overdosed, we would of found the pills in his stomach - I didn’t see any, did you? No scar tissue to indicate cutting... no wounds to indicate murder... no poison, no signs of drowning, no burns, no tumours, no viruses, no nothing!”
“Sweetheart, I know you want to find out what killed this guy... but there’s nothing more to do. Get some rest, yeah? We’ve got a tough day tomorrow.” I refused to surrender, just yet. “Give me that paperwork,” I muttered, and Steve pressed the paper into my hands before turning on his heel and heading in the direction of the door. I looked down at the forms in my hand. The photograph clipped to it was of him, a passport picture perhaps... it looked old. He was smiling up at me, happiness in his eyes. Nothing can kill someone so happy and not leave a trace. I would find one. Even if it meant staying up all night.
A slam jerked me from my thoughts; looking up, I saw the dieners locking the cabinet containing the bodies. A shiver ran down my spine again and I waited until they had turned out the lights and left before I sat down at my desk, turning on the computer and setting the paperwork on the desk.
Time to find out.

Three.
I squinted my green eyes at the blurry words on the screen, looking back at the papers and the photograph that was hunting me, edging me to keep searching. I’d researched so much my fingers where aching - medical dictionaries, the database, books, and every doctor from Hippocrates to Flemming - and still hadn’t found any pointers. But yet a small pile was leaning awkwardly next to my seventeenth mug of coffee - newspaper articles from across the world, from different people but all with the same common theme - unexplainable deaths. Each one with a similarity to Gerard’s. Each one a sufferer of depression.
It could hardly be a coincidence. I neatened the pile up a little and leaned back in my chair, tapping my pen on the desk as my eyes surveyed the top article.
Slam.
I jumped, dropping my pen on the cold metal floor. The familiar sensation of every hair on my body flooded back and I shivered, suddenly cold. Reaching slowly forward, I switched the computer off at the mains, the screen going blank and leaving the only light coming from the lamp above the autopsy table.
More slams. Knocks. Crashes. As if something was trying to get out. I jumped up from my chair and spun on my heel, surveying the steel cabinets, horrified. The slams were coming from... Cabinet 941977. No.
I walked forwards, cringing at every noise issuing from the chamber. I reached out my hands to the lock, turning the key already embedded in it and gripping the cold handle. I pulled... and there was silent.
And then I fell.

Four.
Winded, I collapsed onto the metal floor, my head smashing and feeling as though it had split in two. My eyes aching at my vision obscured by my own breath, rising in faint clouds, I looked up at the open cabinet, the steam issuing out of it as the ice inside melted rapidly from the room temperature.
Leaning forward as much as my pained back would allow from it’s awkward position on the floor, I peered up into the cabinet. Empty. Maybe I was imagining it all, maybe they’d just come to take the body away to the undertakers... I hadn’t seen anyone. And dieners don’t make that much noise.
“G-Gerard?” I whispered, my voice catching in my throat as I called out to him pathetically. I didn’t expect an answer. I didn’t get one. Instead, I heard a noise. Movement. And a shadow falling over me. A hand appeared beside my face, twitching as it awaited my grasp.
I took it and was pulled shakily to my feet, the cold flesh sending shockwaves through my veins. I stood shakily, clasping my head with one hand, trying to numb the pain and tuned to face him.
He was pale, almost blue, but a fine blush deeper than the last was warming his face and contrasting his green eyes, unfocused but staring holes into mine. His jacket was hanging limply around his skinny frame, the red shirt beneath marked with words that my eyes couldn’t make out in the poor lighting. On his hands were two plastic bags we had tied around his wrists, to preserve the only evidence of death we had found on his body - spots of blood on his palms. As I watched him he ripped at the bags with his fingernails, tearing the tape off and letting the cellophane fall to his feet. I would of stopped him but I was just... in shock. The coffee must have been making me hallucinate.
“Who... who are you?” He whispered, his American accent ringing in my ears long after the words had left him. I stuttered. “A-Are you... Gerard W-way?” He paused, looking thoughtful. “I... think so.”

Five.
“Why are you here?” I whispered slowly, still attempting to cling to the realistic thought that this was only a dream - a thought that was slipping away through my fingers as I watched him move, breathe, live. He remained silent; staring at his hands, his feet, himself, coming to terms with his sudden return to existence. I wasn’t sure whether I should be scared or sympathetic - my feelings were heading towards the latter.
“I... I don’t know...” He began, flipping his long black fringe out of his eyes, “I don’t remember anything after... it happened.” “After what happened?” I urged. He shook his head. “I died,” He said simply, and sighed, “so why am I alive?” The room was growing steadily colder around me, numbing my skin to the point of aching. “You... you can’t be alive. It’s... not possible.” “Then why am I dead?” I faltered, “I... don’t know, either.”
A smile flickered on his white lips. Momentarily, like a static television screen. “Then I guess this conversation isn’t going to lead to any answers.” I nodded weakly. “So, who are you? And where am I?” He questioned, turning to admire his surroundings, seemingly in awe. “This is the New Jersey State Mortuary, in Newark. And I’m Yasmin Bell - I work here.” “What do you work as?” He asked interestedly. I slumped my shoulders and uttered the haunting name of my occupation. “Pathologist.”
“S... so you did this?” He whispered sadly, and pulled up his shirt, revealing the neat black stitching on his skin. I nodded tearfully. “Sorry.” I muttered. He smiled that weak, sorrowful smile again. “It’s alright. I s’pose you had to find out some way.”
Find out what? We hadn’t found out anything. A total dead end case. What did he know that I didn’t? Then I remembered I was having a pleasant conversation about autopsy with a corpse.
“Find out what?” I asked, my heart suddenly rising into my throat, choking me. His green eyes widened in shock as he stared at me. “You... you doctors don’t know?” “What? What don’t we know? What?” I urged. He sighed, simply, and walked towards me, swaying slightly and coming to a halt right in front of me, his icy face inches from mine. I could feel the cold from his skin hitting mine and I shivered, looking him in the eye as he did the same. “There’s... something weird going on. Can’t you feel it in the air? Something is coming.” “What’s coming?” He shook his head and averted his eyes to the floor, his brows furrowing slightly.
“A plague.”

“S... so you did this?” He whispered sadly, and pulled up his shirt, revealing the neat black stitching on his skin. I nodded tearfully. “Sorry.” I muttered. He smiled that weak, sorrowful smile again.
That made me sad =[ He seems to be a very polite corpse though.

Six.
“Plague?” I repeated slowly, doubtful. There couldn’t be a plague. It had been hundreds of years since the last and if anybody was going to discover one, it would be us. He nodded, his black hair falling limply into his eyes. “But I need you to help me.” He whispered. I looked at him, wondering whether I should agree to help a dead person or not. I decided that at least if this was all a very bizarre dream, nothing else would happen if I said yes. “Okay.” I said hesitantly. He smiled and turned to look at the light above the autopsy table once more.
“Do you believe in vampires?” He asked, glancing at me over his shoulder as I paused, my mind racing. Of course I believed in vampires. I didn’t know why, but I did. But I would sound pathetic if I admitted it. Best keep it professional. “Vampires aren’t real,” I smiled, “A myth. Just a myth.” “You sure about that?” I paused again, “...No.”
He laughed, a sweet laugh that reminded me of a small child... or a very cold child. “They’re real.” “If you say so...” I said carefully, expecting to wake up next to my coffee and paperwork, or even better, back in bed without having to worry about the case of Gerard Way’s death. His face fell back into its normal sad, serious expression. “And vampires are spreading the plague. I don’t know how-“ He added, eyeing my confused expression, “But they’re spreading it somehow. Nobody is safe anymore.”
I didn’t know what it was. Maybe it was the coffee addling with my brain. Maybe it was the cold numbing my this-isn’t-real sense. Maybe I was just feeling retarded. But whatever it was, for some reason I actually believed Gerard. And not only that - I wanted to help him. And I didn’t even understand why. It just felt... like I needed to.
“So you’ll help me, right?” Gerard urged. I nodded. He smiled. I smiled. We both stood there, smiling pathetically, laughing at eachother expressions. He already felt like a friend. And we both just smiled at the thought.
Not for long.

Seven. Frank's POV.
I stared angrily at the photographs, framed and mounted on my wall. They were of me, and of him, of all of us together. The good old times. How could they just misplace his body? How the fuck can a body just disappear? They don't just wander off on their own accord. Especially not Gerard's. I knew that a dead Gerard wouldn't just fuck off the night before his funeral. Not my Gerard.
Mikey stirred from his position in the corner, his skinny frame slumped over the desk-chair. He didn't know yet. Maybe it was better off this way, judging by the wreckage of the telephone on the floor from where I'd thrown it, the smashed ornaments I'd flung to the floor in rage. First was denial. Now was the anger. And this... this wasn't helping.
I never expected Gerard to die. I was stupid, I was naive, I overlooked his problems, his depression, his random bouts of disappearing. All those things made up Gerard, and Gerard was my best friend. We had shared good times, happy times, times when we felt it was just him and me, us against the world and laughing the whole way through. And then they turned into bad times. And suddenly he wasn't my Gerard. He was this shell of the guy I once knew.
And then I found him... All I had wanted to do was apologise... And without a sound, he was...
At first I thought I was imagining it. Nobody else knocked on my door like that. But then I heard it again - six rhythmic knocks on my bedroom door. Who else could it be. My parents were out. The only two people with a key to my house was Ray and the Way brothers. But I'd let Mikey in, and Ray was out of town...
I jumped up from my bed, struggling to wake my aching feet as I ran to the door, taking a deep breath as I gripped the handle, wrenching the door open with such force that I heard the curtains billow behind me.
And stood there was him. I blinked and took a step, wondering if the grief was messing with my brain once again. But he looked up at me and smiled. But... Gerard was taller than me...
"Are you Frank Iero?" Said Gerard, but in a voice much different to the one I knew, "I'm Yasmin Bell from the NJ State Mortuary... we gotta talk about something." "Or... or someone?" I whispered back hoarsely. She nodded.

Eight.
The sunlight was just beginning to seep in through his curtains, falling upon him as he folded his arms, surveying the mess of his room, and then me as I took a seat on the floor, looking cautiously at the sleeping figure in the corner.
"Where's his body?" He asked. "Gerard's?" "Who elses." He said it softly but almost menacingly. I shuddered. He was emotionally unstable... one wrong word...
"Do you believe in vampires, Frank?" He paused. "Yes." I nodded in agreement, "And do you believe in the living dead, Frank?" He pondered the thought for a second, casting an eye at a cabinet of books and horror movies pressed against the wall, and scowled, "What are you getting at?"
"What I'm trying to say, what I mean is... Gerard is alive." He stared at me. A mixture of shock, disbelief, and anger. "Shut up." I blinked, "What?" "I said SHUT UP!" He yelled, his eyes suddenly bulging as he gripped the sides of his chair, "DO YOU EVEN KNOW WHAT IT'S LIKE? WHEN YOU'RE BEST FRIEND... AND THEN SOME GIRL COMES AND TELLS ME THIS... JUST SHUT UP!"
In the awkward silence that followed, the person in the armchair awoke suddenly with a groan and reached to the table for his glasses. Frank listened to him but continued to stare at me, his face livid - but with tears rolling silently down his cheeks, shining in the limited rays of light interrupting the morbid scene.
And then I heard footsteps behind me, a hand falling onto my shoulder as I rose, brushing down my jeans and looking up at Frank as he watched the newcomer instead, his expression screaming shock. The boy in the armchair was the first to speak. "G-Gerard?" He whispered, standing up and breaking into a run as he flung himself at Gerard, wrapping his arms around his middle and burying his head into his shoulder. Gerard smiled and patted the boy on the back, whispering his name over and over comforting him. "Mikey, Mikey... you really thought I would just die on you?" He smiled and Mikey laughed, his back still shaking from the tears.
"Yazz," Smiled Gerard, turning Mikey around to face me and wiping his wet cheeks with his sleeve, "this is my little brother." I nodded in Mikey's direction and he grinned back, sniffing. Slowly, we all looked at Frank. After a great pause he took a step forward, then another, until Gerard was right in front of him. He was a great deal shorter than both the brothers, perhaps as tall as me. And cautiously, he put out his hand with a small smile. Gerard smiled too, and took the hand, pulling Frank into a hug. "Don't... don't die again, Gerard." Frank giggled. Gerard laughed and patted him on the head.
"How is this happening?" Mikey whispered, watching the two friends embrace. Gerard shook his head and waited for Frank to release him - when he had, Gerard wiped his own damp face and took up his serious expression once more. "I'll explain it all later. Where's Ray?" "In Chicago," replied Mikey, "checking out some new band." "Then we best get moving. I'm gunna go grab some coffee, and then I'll tell you everything I know. Yazz?"
All eyes turned to me. I shuffled my feet. "I best be getting back to work." Gerard nodded in agreement; the other two looked at eachother. To be honest, I was glad to have a reason to leave. Gerard had some explaining to do and I didn't belong there. They probably weren't interested in visitors. "Then I'll see you around." "Yeah." I nodded, my heart sinking.
He grinned. "You still gunna help me?" "I promise," I laughed. We smiled at one another and then, with a nod and the boys, turned on my heel and exitted the room, their voices still coming from within. "Who was she?" I heard Mikey ask, as I pulled my shoes back on and opened the door Gerard had unlocked earlier. "A friend." I heard him say. I smiled, closed the door, and walked off down the road, the sky a pale blue in the morning sky.

Nine. Allie's POV.
I pulled a white coat over my usual uniform of black as I peered into my pidgeon-hole, sighing at the memos overflowing out of the tray. I picked the letters out and flicked through them, reading the usual headings of "new body discovered", "police need to see...", "staff get-together on Friday". I tossed them into the bin and picked up my schedule from the desk, checking to see who I would have the pleasure of embalming today.
Working in the funeral preparation department of the NJSM wasn't exactly the career I'd had in mind back when I got my scholarships all those years ago at Rutgers. I'd wanted to be an artist, always, or maybe a musician. But instead I was occupied by working grueling long hours of applying make-up to corpses and picking out nice suits for them. Do you know how difficult that is, to pick out Sunday best for a dead guy?
The schedule for today was actually pretty relaxed compared to most days - in fact, it was empty entirely. I surveyed it with confusion for a few moments, and then looked up at my colleagues, who were amusing themselves with a game of cards.
"Err, guys... where are the dead people?" I asked. My boss, Chris, carefully placed the queen of hearts onto the table and turned around to face me. "I actually don't know," He said with a look of concern, "Apparently one of the bodies has gone missing from upstairs." "Missing." I repeated dubiously. He nodded and a few of the others chuckled under their breath. "Missing, yeah, so you may as well take the day off. Unless you want to join us...?"
I declined and pulled off my gloves, throwing them onto my desk and picking up my bag. I shoved my schedule into my out tray and was just about to set off back home for some coffee when the phone rang. I glanced at the others, none of which took any notice of the office phone ringing, and picked it up.
"Hello?" "Allie, is that you?"
I recognized the voice as Yazz. At least the one thing that kept me from going insane and finding myself dead was the fact that I had a friend upstairs who I could chat to over the office line and Internet about the latest colour-clashing issues with my patients.
"The one and only." I smiled. "It's Yazz. Err I need to ask you to help me with something." "Being...?" "One of the dead guys came back to life last night and he's standing right behind me playing Pokemon on my gameboy."
I wasn't sure whether not to laugh, so I tried my hardest to contain myself. The result was a grunting noise that caused the others to turn around momentarily before continuing their card game. "Yazz..." I managed to say as I tried to regain my composure, "dead guys don't come back to life." "Allie, I'm serious. This guy came back to life and now everyones blaming me because he's missing from the mortuary."
I started to laugh at the absurdity of what I was hearing... and then the reality kicked in. Missing from the mortuary. I was getting the day off because of a missing body. It fitted perfectly. But surely this guy couldn't of come back to life...?
"Allie... Allie, say something." Yazz urged. I snapped out of my thoughts. "I'll only believe it when I see it... but it makes sense." I heard some talking in the background. "Come up here now, and I'll tell you everything." "O-okay, then..." I stuttered. I carefully put the phone back down and leaned against my desk, staring up at the ceiling and wondering what exactly I was going to find up there.
