Chapter 20…//
My head hit the floor. I opened my eyes, only for them to sting at the strange and new dark red light. It took a while for them to adjust. After waiting a while, I gained enough strength to sit up, and that’s when I saw that Yazz wasn’t next to me.
Panic engulfed me like fire. The back of my head was throbbing, making me lose my concentration. I tried to stand up, but failed. Thoughts began racing through my mind.
I was alone in a place that I knew nothing about. Trapped at the end of a dark corridor with no door behind, above, below or in front of me, helpless. The burning torches on the walls flickered in the tinted red water on the floor. And then I saw her, laying still and silent on her back at the opposite end of the corridor.
“Yazz!” I screamed, pulling myself to my feet and starting to run towards her. It made me nauseous, but I didn’t care. I just had to get to her, protect her, see if she was okay.
I dropped down onto my knees when I reached her side. Her expression was blank, eyelids draped over her eyes and skin slightly blue. I saw the revolvers by her head and checked her pulse, confirming my fears.
I stroked her hair, tears streaming down my face. I took her limp hand and grasped it, shaking it and trying to warm it up, trying to revive her from the fate which had already taken her.
I felt a tickle in my hand. I thought my mind was playing tricks on me, because I was wishing she was alive so hard. But then her eyelids fluttered and nose twitched. I dropped her hand and pulled over to me, resting her head on my lap.
Her eyelids opened. I grinned, leaning down and hugging her tight. She smiled up at me and tried to sit up. I helped her, resting her head in my arms and letting her lean on me for support. I was choking with happiness.
“I thought you were gone…” I whispered, tears falling from my eyes.
“Gerard, we are gone. Check your own pulse. But we’re together.” Her lips formed a slight smile.
“Actually, you might be able to go back.” This was a new voice. I froze, stiff with worry.
The figure of a man walked out from the wall in front of us, followed by a fleet of people, all dressed in black with red areas around their eyes. I gasped.
“Are… are you…?” I started, stammering.
“We are The First” He replied. “Part of our family is known as The Second – they are our enemies. They are most of the Vampires that you see roaming around today. They’re also the ones which helped kill you.”
I nodded, mouth hanging slightly open. The first man smiled, his mid-length dark brown hair just brushing his eyes.
“I am known as The Saint” he continued. “I am capable of sending those worthy back to the living world, and sending traitors down where they have never been before.”
“So this place would make be like, a half way point?” Yazz asked quietly.
”Very good” The Saint smiled. “This is where judgement is cast as to who goes where. We are glad to say, that you two are the first proper descendants of the First to grace our presence in over seven centuries.”
”How did you decide that? The Second made us into Vampires. Surely we should be more like the Second?” I replied.
The Saint nodded. “It is true that you should both be more like The Second. But something in both of your hearts prevented their gene’s from activating properly. You were willing to give your lives to protect those around you. That’s a great achievement.”
“But what do we have that The Second don’t?” Yazz questioned.
“A combination of courage, caring and love.” The Saint whispered. “Many do not posses all of those qualities. When they are savaged by the Second, they cannot protect themselves in their hearts, and therefore they become the Second.”
I was stunned. The only person who could see that in me before was Yazz, and I was the only one that could see it in her.
“Now, we have a proposition for you.”
I looked at Yazz. She nodded. I looked back at The Saint.
”Shoot.”
“We want to send you back the world of the living” he said. “There’s just one small problem.”
“Go on…” Yazz and I said in unison.
“As you’re both part of The First, it would be dangerous if you go back together. One would have to appear to be dead while the other carries out the task. Sort of a coma, but with no pulse or signs of life. They’ll be able to hear when the other talks to them though, and they’ll be able to talk back through their mind. It’s one of the many gifts of The First.”
I raised my eyebrows. Yazz raised one.
“It’s for your safety. It would also make you both legends among The First, and among the humans. And you can always escape if you wish.”
I looked at Yazz again. She nodded, showing that the Saint should continue.
“We need one of you to kill one thousand evil men. You’ll be protected with the hidden powers of the First, and the corpses of a thousand evil men would give The First enough energy to make a stand against The Second… and revive more than one body. We only take the evil of the Mortal and Immortal population, as the innocent should be free to live how The First were never allowed to. If you don’t want to do it, then we’ll understand, and you can both stay with your true family of the First… we’ll give you some time to decide on it, shall we?” The Saint smiled and led his people back through the wall. “When you’ve decided, just call for me!”
“You remember that night when we met them, you told me this gets harder?” Yazz asked me. I nodded.
“Well it did” she continued.
“I know what you’re thinking. I wanna go for it too, but I don’t want us to be separated.”
“We could get rid of the damage that they’ve inflicted… heal temporary wounds more than they would of healed before…”
“So we’re gonna go for it?” I asked.
A pause. “Yeah, let’s go for it. I will avenge my ghost.”
“We both will. Who’s coming back from the dead first, though?”
“You.” Yazz smiled. “You’re more important to go back first, Gerard. You could kill a thousand evil men a lot easier than I could. And then I will be with you.”
“You’re always with me, Yazz. Are you sure you wanna do this though?”
“I’ve lost my fear of falling. I’m sure about it.” Her pretty eyes were glistening. “Just can I ask you one thing?”
“Of course…” I said, wrapping an arm around her shoulders. She turned to look at me.
“Promise me that when I’m gone you’ll kill my enemies?”
I smiled. “I’ll take back the life they stole. I’ll get you back through their demise.”
She smiled, and then laughed. “Just imagine, if we get through this, there could be a perfect theme for the next My Chemical Romance album.”
My eyes lit up. I thought. “Maybe… maybe one of these powers of the First is summoning stuff?” I asked her. She grinned.
“Think about getting a pen and paper.”
I closed my eyes and thought about a pen and paper. A few seconds later, I could feel them dropping into my hand.
“Excellent” I heard her whisper, and we set to work.
About ten minuets later, we called The Saint back. He entered in his usual style, merging through the walls.
“Have you reached a decision?” He asked.
“Yeah. We’ll do it.” I replied.
“Fantastic! The rest of the First will be pleased. I can assure you you’ll always be remembered for this. I’ll set you off then! Who’s going?”
“I am,” I replied. “Can we have a few minuets with each other before we leave though?”
“Sure, I’ll just go and inform the rest of the First.” And with that, The Saint disappeared again.
I pulled Yazz closer to me. “Remember that I’ll always be here for you, no matter what.”
I closed my eyes and wrapped my arms around her waist, leaning down slightly to reach her level. My lips slowly joint with hers as I slipped my tongue gently down her throat for what could be the last time.
We broke apart slowly, not wanting it to end. I took her hand and stood, ready to be spat back out of death itself.
My head hit the floor. I opened my eyes, only for them to sting at the strange and new dark red light. It took a while for them to adjust. After waiting a while, I gained enough strength to sit up, and that’s when I saw that Yazz wasn’t next to me.
