Chapter 17…//
My eyes snapped open. I sat up slowly, not disturbing Yazz, who was still asleep in my arms. It was time.
I felt Yazz roll on her side as she slowly awoke. She stared up at me with her green eyes, then wrapped her arms around my neck. I helped her sit up. I stared her in the eyes, penetrating the deep green inside them. She nodded, ready. I kept eye contact with her, drawing closer…
A knock at the door. I jumped out of my skin and caught Yazz’s rather surprised expression as she whipped around, ready to fight anything that threatened us at the door.
I saw my brothers bespectacled face peer round the door, checking if it was safe to enter. I nodded, placing my hand on Yazz’s arm and gripping it gently. She relaxed as we watched the frozen faces of our friends enter, although our expressions were still hard. Allie seemed to have caught them.
‘Sorry if we intruded on anything’ she whispered, blushing, although I noticed her giving Yazz a slight wink. She blushed and beckoned our visitors to sit down.
‘You guys ready?’ Frank asked us quietly.
‘Yeah’ Yazz replied, as I nodded silently.
‘Look, guys…’ started Loz. ‘We wanted to give you both something… that you could use when you go… so you remember us…’
Mikey walked across to me, setting a large wrapped gift down on my lap. I stared at it blankly, wondering what on earth could have been inside.
But it didn’t have to be on earth anymore.
‘Your birthday present’s inside too’ Mikey told me. I smiled, as I tore open the wrapping. Sitting in front of me, was a bat. A preserved bat. That looked like it had been stuffed with metal, or possibly silver – a paperweight. And next to it… a longbow, and many silver-tipped arrows.
‘I knew how much you loved that old paperweight… and I know that one can’t replace it entirely…’ Mikey murmured. I was beaming, I could feel it. I stood up and walked towards him, giving him one final hug.
Breaking apart, I saw his eyes were gleaming. I looked at him, my eyes questioning. He pulled me back into a hug, babbling through his tears. ‘I’m gonna miss you Gerard’ he cried. ‘I dunno what I’ll do without you’.
‘I’ll miss you too Mikey’ I replied. ‘Shh, stop crying… I would give you a kiss but I don’t want to run the risk of you ending up like me…’
‘I wanna come with you!’ He wailed.
‘No, you don’t. You still have a good life to live here. This is where you belong… not with me. I want you to have the life I’ll never have.’
Mikey looked at me, sniffing. I dried his tears with a tissue from my pocket. He nodded and sat down again, as I returned to Yazz’s side.
‘And we thought the arrows might be useful if you come into a spot of bother with hunters or other vampires’ Loz continued. I nodded, grinning.
‘And for Yazz…’ Zoe prompted, as Allie and Loz placed a smaller package on her lap.
She looked down at it, picked it up and examined it before opening it, with a grin on her face. She tore away the paper to find two pairs of black converses with a custom design on them, and a set of purple stars. The print on the converses happened to be the MCR logos.
‘Ohmygod, thank you!’ Whispered Yazz, her eyes darting between the shoes and the stars.
‘Wait… what are they for?’ I asked, peering over her shoulder.
‘In case you need another pair of shoes. Those will grow and repair themselves’, Loz explained. ‘And those stars… I think Allie would like to explain that.’
‘Devil Stars’ Said Yazz and Allie in unison, both grinning. Allie nodded and continued. ‘Weapons against vampires and hunters. Throw them at them. Or put them in one of your pockets and they’ll give you more energy.’
Alarm bells began ringing in my ears. I glanced over to the window – the sky was falling blacker over the scenery. I didn’t want this to happen so quickly, but I knew it had to. I nudged Yazz.
‘We gotta go’ I whispered into her ear. I saw her face fall. She packed her gifts back into the box under the paper, as I did the same. Everybody seemed to know what was going on. As we stood up, a swarm of people engulfed us. Yazz was squished into my arms, as Loz, Mikey, Allie and Frankie all crushed us together. Behind them, Ray, Zoe and Bob were pushing to get near us.
‘Goodbye’ I whispered, as I got separated from Yazz, the members of My Chemical Romance prising me away from the group, as the girls took Yazz. They were crying silently, as I gave them a final hug. Mikey refused to let me go. I patted him on the back and pulled away from the group – Yazz was still being embraced by Loz. She pulled away and we swapped, her hugging all the guys as I hugged all the girls. Walking back over to her, I took her hand. She looked up at me, her eyes gleaming with tears. We walked out of the room, our small group of friends following us. I wrenched open the front door and stepped out onto the porch – Yazz followed. I could hear Mikey, Loz, Frank and Allie crying loudly behind us.
I noticed Yazz had stopped moving. I looked down at her, and she raised one finger up. I nodded – I knew she wanted to say one last thing to her friends.
She looked over her shoulder, eyes swelling up with tears. Looking at Loz, and then Allie, she mouthed the words “So Long And Goodnight”. Allie grinned and stepped forward. Yazz let go of my hand and turned around completely. They were staring at each other right in the eyes.
‘For the last time…’ Yazz started.
‘SO LONG AND GOODNIGHT!’ The two of them screamed, sinking to their knees and collapsing. Yazz reached out to her friends and her arm dropped to my side as she returned to me, as if she had failed to catch them and bring them with her.
I grinned down at her. She was blushing slightly – a rare occurrence when the blood in your veins always runs cold through your skin.
Grasping her hand again, we took a step forward into the rain, raising our hoods. Feet slipping through the mud, we headed towards the wilderness around the cemetery across the road from my house and away from our past lives forever.

Chapter 18…//
‘You do realise this gets harder?’ I stuttered, the air surprisingly cold for an April night.
‘Yeah’ I heard Yazz reply, as we kept on heading towards the forest behind the cemetery. The sky hung low over our heads, our breath fogging up the black paint of our surroundings.
I threw a leg over the fence separating the cemetery from the thicket beyond it. I helped Yazz’s small frame over and looked past her shoulder and back at the cemetery once more. I thought I saw a slight tear glisten in her eye, and I was pretty sure I could feel one trickling slowly down my face too.
She whipped around, taking my hand in her own. ‘I think… I think we have to say goodbye to them. Say goodbye to everything we ever known. And say goodbye to all the cyanide that we drank.’
I nodded, pulling her closer and hugging her as we looked back across the cemetery. I brushed her hair off of her face and penetrated those deep green eyes with my own. She nodded, and we continued walking.
It must have been hours before we reached the highway. We emerged from the darkness of the forest, where we were sure nobody could see us, thorns clinging onto our skin and clothes. The glinting lights overhead were dimmer than before with all the light pollution, and the eerie blue-purple-red of the sky sent a chill down my spine.
A thump. I looked around and saw Yazz sit in the dust by the roadside, weak, blood drawn from her face and neck, where her clothes couldn’t protect her. I felt the blood trickle down my own face as I sat down next to her, cradling her in my arms.
‘Are you feeling okay?’ I asked quietly, waving a hand at the street lights, blowing the lights from them away.
She nodded slowly, smiling up at me slightly. ‘I guess so. But… we won’t be able to make it much longer, Gerard.’
I raised my eyebrows. She smiled at me again and sat up, enclosing her hand around my own. ‘Don’t look at me like that. I know you feel it too. You know theres only one thing that’s gonna keep us going… the one thing we both swore not to do.’
She was staring me right in the eyes. I knew she could see right into my black little soul, and I nodded.
‘So what are we gonna do?’ I asked. It was a pointless question, as we both knew the only options.
She stood up and walked over to a surprisingly clear puddle, gazing at her reflection in the water. She dropped to her knees as I approached, both of us knowing what we had to do.
‘You go first.’ I washed my hands in the puddle and flipped my hair out of my face. She looked at me.
‘Are you sure?’ She sounded worried. I rested her chin on my hand, softly turning her head round to face me.
‘You know you have to. I’ll be okay. Just know that even when I’m a total wreck, you’re beautiful, and that I love you.’ I dived into her eyes again, and she nodded. She washed her hands, and we both stood up.
‘Ready?’ She asked, stuttering. I nodded, tilting my head downwards at hers, closing my eyes at the same time she did…

Chapter 19…//
A low, rumbling growl filled the air. My eyes snapped open, as did Yazz’s. Her teeth were inches away from my neck. She stood, frozen to the spot, taking short breaths.
I pulled her closer. I tore off my leather jacket and wrapped it around her shoulders, then checked my bow and arrows were draped securely off by back as I shoved my paperweight into my front drainpipe pocket and my revolver in the back.
“Put your converses on!” I whispered at her urgently, silently circling around her, trying to see where they were gonna come from. She stood up after she laced them and took my place, as I shoved my own magical converses onto my feet.
“They can’t have found us already!” She half wailed, half muttered. We were back to back, both with weapons drawn – in my case, bow and arrows, a revolver with silver bullets, and in the worst case scenario, a paperweight. For Yazz, Devil Stars, another revolver and the sword she got me for my birthday. Our senses were alert, and we were ready for them.
Half a dozen jumped out at us from every direction. We immediately broke away from our stance and went after three each, both of us pulling off some very quick manoeuvres to stop ourselves from being killed. I’d just stabbed the first in the heart with a silver tipped arrow, which released a foul odour and ear piercing wail, when I heard a scream.
“Gerard, swap!” Yazz was being cornered by her share of the vampires. She threw me the sword and whipped out Mikey’s old gun. I knew what she wanted to swap. As I caught the sword, I tossed her my revolver. I sensed a presence behind me and jumped around, one vampire with particularly long and gruesome fangs running straight underneath me, and the other being sliced with my birthday present.
“This thing works really well!” I called to her, grinning. I peered over, and saw that she managed to have dodged around them and behind them, waiting. Their grey skinned heads turned around, growling.
A hail of bullets. She was walking towards them, pulling the triggers on each of our revolvers, hitting the three vampires squarely in the chest, their red eyes bleeding and eventually closing. I grinned.
I found myself on the floor, winded. The final vampire was hanging over me, pleased. It drew closer, it’s dreadful breath gassing me and seeming to even fog up my eyes.
“Gerard, catch!” I rolled over and saw a purple shape flying towards where I lay. I stuck a hand out and shoved the Devil Star in my pocket, giving me more energy. More purple shapes came flying towards me. I ducked, and they cut straight through the enemies neck.
I stood up, brushing myself down, but found myself nearly on the floor again. I looked out at my surroundings and saw the outline of Yazz burning against the darkness. I crawled over to her. She was panting heavily, bleeding dark blood as tears trickled down her cheeks.
“Please say that’s all of them; please tell me that’s all of them…” She cried. I stroked the back of her head as she buried her face into my chest.
I heard a rasping, gasping breath. I looked over to my right, where the corpses of two vampires lay. The other, however, was still fighting for life, as the silver bullet in it’s heart penetrated deeper. It spoke in the same, unnatural and rasping tone.
“The only reason… you were spared… is because of what… lies ahead of you…” were its final words, eyes finally closing and head hitting the ground.
I don’t know how long we sat there, me holding her in my arms. It must’ve not been very long, but it felt like an eternity. It was like we were back in our previous lives, when surviving alone and without the comfort, laughter and good advice from our friends wasn’t ever something we’d see ourselves doing.
More rustling from the trees. I looked around, my vision starting to blur. I saw heavily armoured figures running out at us from every angle, bearing stakes of metal and guns of silver. I clasped onto Yazz even tighter, whispering to her that we’d be okay, when we were forced onto our backs with knives by our throats.
I could see about fifteen figures around me, all in the same uniform of black armour and helmets. The one standing right in front of us started talking.
“What are you?” It said. It had a low voice, and I was assuming it was a guy.
“We’re not like the rest” I blurted out, my hand finding its way to Yazz’s and grasping it. She was still panting and crying slightly.
“What do you mean, not like the rest? All of you are vermin. Can’t you read our uniform?” I didn’t move, but I felt the knife move slightly away from my throat so I could read our captors uniforms. They all read the same: “Vampire Control Team”.
“So you’re hunters.” I muttered, not looking at them.
”Very good!” The usual one replied. He seemed to be the leader. “Now give us one good reason why we shouldn’t kill you both now.”
I was lost for words. I didn’t know how I was going to reply. Luckily, I didn’t have to.
“We… we didn’t choose… choose to be vampires…” gasped Yazz. “We don’t… don’t drink human blood… and we swore… swore not to… we don’t want… to be feared or… to live in fear of… the others…”
I felt myself being pushed to my feet. Yazz collapsed into my arms. I don’t know where I got the strength to hold her from.
The head hunter walked towards us and took off his helmet. He had wonky teeth and a few black gaps, messy, long and matted dark brown hair and dead, blue-grey eyes. As Yazz looked up into his face, her face twisted in anger and hatred.
“Thomas. It’s been… some time.” She sounded like she was drowning in rage.
“Why yes, yes it has. Oh, how perfect this is! You and you’re first lover, begging for mercy at my hand. And you, trying to spin us lies about being ‘different’ to all the rest…”
I don’t know where she got the energy from, but I found myself having to restrain her from punching the man stood in front of her. He cackled and glared at us. She spat at his feet.
“How do you know each other…?” I asked, confused.
“Gerard… this would be my lovely and caring ex boyfriend. And may he burn in hell.” Her eyes narrowed as she spoke.
“So that would make him-“
“Around seventeen, yeah.” Her eyes were glowing with darkness.
Thoughts were racing through my mind. Could this be true? And why had this guy used words like ‘first lover’? Then I remembered bargaining our lives was probably more important.
“So you finally ended up with this scum.” Tom slapped me round the face. “Who ever thought anyone would want to date a rotten old vampire?”
This time, I couldn’t restrain her. Yazz pulled away from me and kneed her ex swiftly in the balls, with perfect aim.
“I would of thought you would of remembered how much that hurts when I do that to you” she panted, staring down at him.
He glared up at her. “You’re really gonna need to beg if you wanna stay alive now, Vampire.”
“Do we really need to prove to you that we’re different to the others!?” I broke out again.
“Or do you just want an excuse to see us dead?” Yazz spoke bitterly. At this, I saw Tom smile.
“Show me that you’re different to the others somehow. And we might think of letting you go.”
I looked at Yazz. She looked back, and winked. Her eyes travelled down to my pocket. I grinned, removed my paperweight and we started talking to it.
Within seconds, a flock of bats swarmed down on our captors. We ran across the highway, calling out to them. “We told you we didn’t like killing humans!” was the last they ever heard of us.
But we were back in the forest, both of us weak and dying. We were vulnerable, and the others would probably be back for us soon. Yazz leant against a tree trunk. I knew what was on her mind, as the constant noise in the branches was making us wary and playing tricks on our minds.
“We gotta do what we gotta do.” I said, looking glumly at the floor.
“But… but we’ll always be together, right? Even after the deed is done?” She was worried and sad, I could tell.
“Of course. ‘Cuz that’s how we like to do it in the murder scene.”
She smiled, and pulled out the twin revolvers. She passed one to me. I pulled her off the tree and closer towards me, wrapping my arms around her. I swallowed.
“What’s wrong?” She asked. Her voice was small.
”I don’t think I have the guts to put this to your head…” I muttered, eyeing the revolver over.
“None of it would matter if we’re already dead. As long as we’re together.”
I smiled. Even at her weakest moment, she had courage. We loaded the revolvers and moved closer. My nose was just about to touch her forehead. I looked down and whispered.
“I love you.” I took the gun to her head. “I love you too.” She took the other to mine.
We leant in closer, her smooth lips touching my own. We heard cannibalistic wails, and knew the others had seen us, but we had to keep going. My finger pulled down on the trigger.
Four surprisingly loud gunshots filled the air. We collapsed to the floor, still embracing, blood and brains spurting from inside our skulls. Just as we pulled the trigger, so did those that surrounded us. Two shots to the back of the head drowned us in cold and black water and stole our lives.
I won't go down with myself. But I'll go down with my friends.

Just as an answer to Allie's question of how many song references can I shove into one chapter,, From chapters eighteen and nineteen I remember counting: - It's Not A Fashion Statement,, It's A Deathwish - To The End - Demolition Lovers [twice] - Early Sunsets Over Monroeville - I Never Told You What I Do For A Living - Bury Me in Back [but that one's very vague. It's a brief reference in this part: “Gerard, swap!” Yazz was being cornered by her share of the vampires. She threw me the sword and whipped out Mikey’s old gun. I knew what she wanted to swap. As I caught the sword, I tossed her my revolver. That would be refering to the line "I've been calling you all week for my shotgun".] So yeah. There you go =].
